During the experiments subjects have been asked to complete two questionnaires in order to assess their pre-existing knowledge in the specific domain of the Case Study and to test if learning has actually occurred.

Kipling Case Study
The pre- and the post-learning questionnaire consisted of 30 multiple-choice questions with five alternatives. For each multiple-choice question just one answer could be correct. The maximum score for each questionnaire was 30 points (one point for each correct answer to one question; zero points in case of incorrect answer).

Statistics Case Study
The pre-learning questionnaire consisted of twelve questions: seven multiple-choice questions with four alternatives and five open questions, where subjects had to describe the solution in their own words. The post-learning questionnaire also consisted of twelve questions (ten multiple-choice questions and two open questions).
For each multiple-choice question one or several alternatives could be correct. For the open questions usually at least two parts were required: The answer to the question plus an explanation. The maximum score for each questionnaire was 12 points (one point for a complete correct answer to one question). Each false alternative was subtracted from the correct alternatives, but never leading to a negative score so that a question could only result in 0 points.
